Although offering completely different aesthetics, van Noten and Castiglioni have both gained acclaim by testing boundaries, pushing limits, and subsequently raising the bar. Dries van Noten and collaborated with typographer Job Wouters and visual artist Gijs Frieling on his Autumn Winter 2012 collection. The end result was an entire men's collection of shirts, jackets and complete outfits that displayed colourful visual displays that one would typically see hanging on a pop-art museum wall. Van Noten went even further by presenting the collection in a space that was simultaneously occupied by Frieling, Wouters and a number of participating artists, all of whom were perched on ladders or kneeled down low as they painted murals on the walls. This gave audience members the pleasure of witnessing two different arts bloom at the same time.
Dries van Noten has also collaborated with photographer James Reeve by reinterpreting the striking photographs in Reeve's "Lightscapes" project. Van Noten's collaboration with Reeve was the focus his Spring Summer 2012 womenswear collection, which he appropriately called "Garments, Lightscapes" Marni with Brian Rea Whether you are describing the womenswear, menswear, kid's line or accessories, there is absolutely nothing plain about the designs that come out of the Marni fashion house. Founded and led by Consuelo Castiglioni, Marni has also dipped into the collaborative realm, most notably with illustrator Brain Rea. Castiglioni spotted a level of symmetry between her colourfully pattern-heavy designs and Rea's simple yet captivating drawing technique. Ultimately, what Castiglioni saw in Rea's work was a representation of "iconic youth cultures that clash and mingle in unexpected ways," which is precisely what she wanted to exude in the 2012 Winter Edition collection.
